The book’s filling out in the sparse bits this week, more than I would have predicted in light of a sudden onslaught of paid labor. I’m starting to get into the details of some very difficult scenes. And you know what? In this first pass of storytelling, they’re terrible! My characters are all blundering around, blurting out stuff that’s supposed to be subtle or temporarily ambiguous until big reveals later. So much blurting! The first draft always has stretches like this. And those stretches always develop into something I can put into a reader’s hands without blushing.
